Dress Code & Standard School Attire

Standard School Attire at Sedway Middle School is intended to instill pride in every student, and furthermore, it positively impacts the safety, learning and overall school climate. Within the guidelines of the Standard School Attire initiative, students have the liberty to mix and match their clothing, allowing for individuality and creativity.

Regulation 5131 states that at least 55 percent of the surveys returned from families must agree to implement the Standard Student Attire Policy. 76.20% of the families who returned surveys from Sedway Middle School have voted in favor of Standard Student Attire.

  • Males – All items of clothing must be in solid colors of khaki, blue, black, gray, white with no pattern, no words, and no brand name logos.
    • Pants/shorts, blue jeans, and denim pants (sized to fit). Pants are not to be pegged at the bottom.
    • Sweat pants will not be allowed.
    • Shirts (with collars only) may be long or short sleeved.
    • Shirts without collars will not be allowed.
    • Sweaters (worn over approved shirts)
    • Sweatshirts with or without school logo.
    • Ties are allowed

    • Tights/leggings (worn under approved clothing).
    • Shorts, skirts, and skorts, sized to fit, must be the appropriate length (fingertip length) and hemmed.Only school logos may be worn on shirts. Additionally, the apparels must be free of all wording, pictures, studs, jewels, etc.
    • All clothing must be sufficient to conceal any and all undergarments. No skin will show between the bottom of the shirt/blouse and the top of the pants or skirts at any time.•Belts should be worn. Belts and belt buckles must be free of all pictures, words, hanging strings or fringe, and excessive decorations. There is no sagging at Sedway Middle School.
    • Note that sweaters, sweatshirts, and vests are not a substitute for the required collared shirt/blouse.Items that advocate the use of tobacco, hate, violence, self-degradation, or controlled substances are prohibited.
    • Jackets and Coats of the appropriate size must be worn with approved clothing underneath. Further, jackets/ coats, mittens/gloves, and scarves must be removed in the classrooms and office buildings. Note that jackets and coats are not a substitute for collared shirts.
    • Shoes with soles must be worn. Acceptable footwear includes tennis shoes, loafers, flats, dress shoes, and sandals. All shoes requiring shoelaces must be laced and tied appropriately. House shoes, shower shoes, and flip-flops are prohibited.
    • All other dress attire, head gear, hats, sweatbands, and wallet-chains are not allowed on campus and are subject to seizure by the administration.
    • Jewelry must not be of a nature to distract or endanger either the wearer or others.

Students in violation of the Standard School Attire initiative will be referred to the Deans’ Office for disciplinary action. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. Habitual offenders will be placed on Required Parent Conference (RPC), as it becomes an issue of insubordination.

The school administration shall have the right to designate which types of dress, fashion, fads, or appearances disrupt or detract from the educational program and may be a potential safety hazard. The principal shall retain the authority to grant exceptions for spirit days, special event dress days, and school wide free dress days. On those CCSD/school sanctioned exception days, schools will notify the students and parents/guardians of the unique dress provisions.
